Romano Scavolini’s 1981 shocker Nightmare is notorious for many things; from the never-ending debate as to who really created the special effects to its inclusion on the ‘Video Nasty’ list in the UK during the 1980s. Sleazy, amateur and sadistic, Nightmare (renamed by its British distributors as Nightmare in a Damaged Brain) was the subject if controversy upon its initial release, further fuelled by a ‘guess the weight of the brain in the jar’ campaign that accompanied its original run.
The deeply disturbed George Tatum (Baird Stafford) has been released from a mental institution, having been incarcerated since he butchered his parents as a child. Having been subjected to various medical experiments in an effort to purge him from his murderous impulses, George sets off on a journey from New York back to Florida to his old family home, where fresh new victims await.

I remember NIGHTMARES IN A DAMAGED BRAIN (english title)from when i was about 8 or so.And its another title i shouldnt really have seen at such a tender age.(Madman,Rabid,The Exterminator et al)but i did courtesy of the entrepreneur down the road at Brew And View videos who conveniantly had a copy “under the counter”.Well, its a scuzzy, sleazy affair. From the brightly lit, neon of 42nd street with its strip shows and grindhouses,to the kinky bondage flashbacks-this is the kind of movie that makes you want to scrub yourself with disinfectant after watching.Im a sucker for this sort of grimy gem and consider this,BASKET CASE and THE EXTERMINATOR to be among the movies that put me on the path to being the genre freak i am today.Tom Savini has gone on record as saying he wasnt involved in this, but i think the producers just said balls to it and put his name on it anyway because of his notoriety with Friday 13th and The Burning.A quick look at the credits states that Joanne Hansen handled the makeup ashe did on my beloved Madman. So all in all,not the greatest psycho movie ever made, but a great slice of early 80s sleaze.I picked up this DvD in cash converters for 99p..it retails atHMV for £16.00(!)Add it to your sleaze collection!!
