I always used to joke when Hollywood first became obsessed with remaking every movie imaginable that if they really wanted to destroy a classic they should cast Ben Affleck in a new version of Citizen Kane. It seems they have finally done one better by remaking an Alfred Hitchcock classic with none other than Will Smith.
According to Latino Review, the former The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is set to both produce and star in a new version of Suspicion, which had originally starred Cary Grant and had been the director’s fourth Hollywood production after relocating from England in 1940.
The site have revealed that the project is to be produced by Paramount but have no concrete information, so this should be treated as a rumour until something official has been announced.
Whilst Hitchcock himself chose to remake his 1935 movie The Man Who Knew Too Much twenty years later, ever since Gus Van Sant’s 1998 shot-for-shot rehash of Psycho, filmmakers have opted to pay homage to the legendary director and not attempt to remake his work. There has also been talk of an updated adaptation of The Birds. Clearly Hollywood have lost respect in what it means for something to be a classic… it is perfect as it is!
Fuck no!
