There are zombie movies and then there are George A. Romero zombie movies. Having re-invented the genre in the late 1960s with the seminal masterpiece Night of the Living Dead, he was returned to the concept time and time again with the spatter epic Dawn of the Dead and the criminally underrated Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead.
Although his last chapter, Diary of the Dead (which took the action back to the night it all began, despite featuring modern technology), proved a major disappointment and alienated many of his fans, anticipation is high for his latest effort, Survival of the Dead.
It’s hard to know what to expect – the cast boasts an extremely unconvincing Irish character (something that Day of the Dead was also guilty of), but the cinematography (from Diary of the Dead’s Adam Swica) is very impressive and no one does zombie like Romero. Hopefully he would have learnt from his mistakes with his last movie and hired a cast that can act.
MySpace and Bloody Disgusting have presented the latest trailer for the movie, which reveals little in the way of plot and shows a few zombies that lack the style of his earlier monsters. Survival of the Dead will be released theatrically in May.
