NEWS - Today’s Pointless Remake No. 2 – Escape from New York  | read this item

Following on from the news about the RoboCop remake still being a possibility, more depressing news for ’80s fans is that yet another John Carpenter classic is about to be soiled on by overzealous producers and talentless filmmakers. With the likes of Halloween, The Fog and Assault on Precinct 13 having been dragged through the dirt, the latest Carpenter flick set to be ‘rebooted’ is his 1981 sci-fi actioner Escape from New York.

This is hardly surprising as there has been talk about this for some time, with Gerard Butler rumoured to be taking over from Kurt Russell as rugged antihero Snake Plissken. But New York Magazine’s Vulture blog has reported that New Line Cinema is hastily rushing their remake into production.

Rewritten by Allan Loeb (replacing David Kajganich), who also penned the script for Oliver Stone’s upcoming sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleep, Vulture claims that Loeb has managed to bring back Snake without resorting to parody. This time, however, instead of rushing into Manhattan to save the president (seriously, could they not just choose another city?), he will be setting his sites of a female senator. Could this be a love interest?

It seems that the studio even want to touch upon current themes with their new story, with Vulture stating ‘This Manhattan was evacuated and turned into a privately run penal colony after the detonation of a crude radioactive dirty bomb on the outskirts of the city.’

The blog has also stated that Carpenter would only release the rights to the movie if New Line agreed to keep Snake the same as he always had been, sporting an eye patch and a bad attitude. Wonder if he will still have balls though!

JESUS H CHRIST..When is this going to end? Escape from New York is possibly my fave ever film and theyre going to bastardize this as well. This is after mutilating Halloween,The Fog, Hills Have Eyes,Assault on P13,The Omen blah blah blah. Its a tragedy.Escape, for me is the quintessential action/sci fi movie-in my eyes its as close to perfection as you can get. From Kurt Russells deadpan Clint Eastwood impersonation through Ernest Borgnines chirpy but cowardly Cabbie to Issac Hayes` twitching duke, this movie is the bees knees and possibly Carpenters best. The Thing? Maybe.Im Not sure but this is the movie which made me stop scratching my balls as a kid and sit up and take notice of the names on the screen-CARPENTER.After this i watched The Fog and the rest is history – i was hooked. Now we all know Escape From LA sucked dirt, but this one has quite a legacy-just ask Robert Rodriguez and Neil Marshall.Rodriguez licensed the mucic from EFNY from Carpenter and used it in Planet Terror. In the same movie,he even named the army unit Black Flight after the one in EFNY.Marshall,on the other hand homaged EFNY to honourable effect in Doomsday-from the opening narration complete with computer generated maps like the ones at the beginning of EFNY,and even names one of the main charecters Carpenter.I wonder what those two think of this project. If theyre anything like me,theyll be mad as hell. Its one thing to take something which is flawed and try to improve it in some way,but when its as good as EFNY,WHAT IS THE POINT?The music is vintage Carpenter, and for me this wouldnt be the same movie without it.In the remake, theyll probably have some thrash metal thing going on and not a synthesiser in sight.ITS A SAD SAD DAY FOR 1980s GENRE FANS.

  2. Love this movie, such 80s class!
