When remakes, reboots and sequels become tiresome there is always one way to resurrect a fledging franchise… the prequel. If the story has run its course, why not show fans how it all began? Sadly, however, this technique never seems to work, as prequels very rarely live up to their predecessors and become as unnecessary as remakes (as fans will discover with The Thing). So how do you make a prequel interesting? Hollywood’s answer is 3D.
Those who are bored of the gimmick of 3D still have plenty of movies to wait for that boast the gimmick: Piranha, Zombieland 2, etc. Perhaps the most disturbing news of all is that has been revealed by Shadow Locked: the Alien prequel will also be using it! If the unnecessary sequels and spin-offs didn’t kill the franchise then this is almost guaranteed to, despite original director Ridley Scott being attached.
Art director Roger Christian has revealed in an interview with the site that ‘Ridley’s doing the next Alien in 3D… He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there’s ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I’m hoping he’ll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it – everybody.’
So a new trilogy, kicking off with a 3D prequel? Surely Scott, who was not only responsible for the first Alien but also other classics such as Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise, should know better than to cheapen such a masterpiece with a mediocre gimmick like 3D. ‘Paul Anderson was here (in Toronto) shooting the next Resident Evil movie in 3D, so I went down on the set with him,’ adds Christian. ‘Watching shots of zombies in 3D is amazing – I got really excited! For horror films, it’s brilliant’
