Fans of 1980s schlock may be familiar with Frank Henenlotter, the director of such cult splatter flicks as Basket Case and Frankenhooker. Despite somewhat quiet of late, the Bad Biology filmmaker has revealed to Shock Till You Drop that he has two exciting documentaries in the works. The first is on the career of the Godfather of Gore himself, Herschell Gordon Lewis, whilst the second is to be titled That’s Sexploitation.
Regulars to this site will no doubt be familiar with our love for old school exploitation and the hammy classics of Lewis are a personal favourite. Those who have yet to see Blood Feast and The Gruesome Twosome have some serious catching up to do. The sexploitation genre, meanwhile, has been enjoying a minor resurgence thanks to many relics being unearthed for DVD.
The Lewis documentary is set to rear its ugly head later this year, thanks to Something Weird Video, whose cult back catalogue includes many of Lewis’ long lost classics (such as She-Devils on Wheels and even Something Weird).
With a career spanning half a century (check out our interview here), Herschel Gordon Lewis is a fitting subject for a documentary.
Hell yeah!
