NEWS - The Prowler Coming to Blu-ray  | read this item

These days it seems us slasher fans are spoilt! If it is not the never-ending onslaught of disappointing remakes (My Bloody Valentine excluded) then it is the regular updates of sleazy classics that are being brought into the digital age. Following on from the recent announcements of both Madman and The Slumber Party Massacre, the latest set for a makeover is Joseph Zito’s underrated classic The Prowler.

Blue Underground, who previously released the movie on DVD back in 2003, have are intending on updating the flick to Blu-ray, with a release slated for later this year. Despite the film having failed to find the same kind of audience as Friday the 13th when it was released back in 1981, the groundbreaking special effects from genre veteran Tom Savini and strong performances from Farley Granger and Cillian Murphy look-a-like Christopher Goutman have helped it to become a favourite amongst slasher fans.

No details have been announced regarding special features or technical details but it is expected to be completely uncut, showing Savini’s best work in all its gory glory. The previous DVD included a commentary between Zito and Savini, behind the scenes footage and a trailer, but no word if these will be passed over to the new release.

    Fucking awesome!

In the synopsis for the Blue Underground release, it says that it’s uncut and uncensored, but there is also the R rating on the back. Is it indeed uncut?

  3. The original Blue Underground DVD was uncut and I can’t see the Blu-ray going a different way. All of Savini’s FX were intact. And Blue Underground’s DVDs usually are uncut, as The Toolbox Murders, Hell of the Living Dead and all the others were. So I think this one will be uncut.

Since I don’t have a blu-ray player, the Blue Underground DVD will suffice then. Some day I’ll catch up with technology, but right now I’m still not sold on blu-ray. I don’t even have an HD T.V..

  5. I agree, the leap from VHS to DVD was major, but Blu-ray doesn’t impress me that much. And if the transfer is not perfect it shows the imperfections quite badly I hear. But the DVD should be fine, it has a commentary and some Savini footage. Blue Underground DVDs are worth getting, I had loads.

With movies like The Prowler, The Burning, Mother’s Day, etc., I like the grainy picture and not-so-perfect sound quality. For me it just adds to the nostalgia of the movie.

  7. I do like it when they clean up old movies but it’s great watching the original print on the big screen with all the trailers included.

The leap from VHS to DVD was not major. Especially at first. Early DVDs were no better than VHS tapes or have you forgotten that? I watched the Bladerunner Bluray you got me for my birthday the other day and the picture quality is stunning. I agree that not all are perfect , but out of the 10 I have only 1 is average quality.

  9. Bryan Hennelly says:

Yes I remember the early DVDs (particularly the ‘flippers’ from Warner) and I agree that most of them were nothing special, but it took them a while to discover DVD’s full potential. But the leap from VHS at its very best to DVDs as they are today is major. I’m sure Blu-ray must have something more to offer but it’s not enough for me to change over. But they’re certainly gaining in popularity and there’s a far better selection now than there was even twelve months ago.

  10. The first DVD I ever bought was The Evil Dead and I was blown away by how crisp the picture was. Having grown up with the cut VHS release, it was this DVD that convinced me to replace my other videos. I’m quite happy with DVDs at this time though so not ready to upgrade yet, maybe in another ten years.

  11. Helicon says:

If you ever saw my Usual Suspects DVD then you would know exactly what I was getting at. I even took it back to the shop as it was a disgrace. The Crow DVD I have is also shocking quality. Also who says anything about upgrading? I still buy DVDs , I just now have the option of Bluray too. I’m not mad enough to want to replace everything.

This is one movie I hope never gets remade
