Interesting news for fans of 1980s slashers and psychological thrillers is that the original 1987 version of The Stepfather will be released on Blu-ray later this year. Directed by Joseph Ruben (who was also responsible for the Julia Roberts flick Sleeping with the Enemy) and starring Terry O’Quinn (better known as John Locke from Lost), the movie received mostly positive reviews upon its initial release (Roger Ebert declared that ‘The Stepfather has one wonderful element: Terry O’Quinn’s performance).
Followed by two inferior sequels, The Stepfather became something of a cult until it was recently rediscovered when Nelson McCormick directed the remake. Fans of ’80s schlock may also have recognised Shelley Hack in a supporting role, who had previously appeared in John Carl Buechler’s creature flick Troll.
Blu-ray.com have announced that New Century will be releasing the original movie on Blu-ray on June 15, although there are no details on special features at this time.
Aww, just bought the DVD not long ago.
