Having already interviewed filmmaker Douglas McKeown regarding his cult flick The Deadly Spawn, we were able to get our hands on a selection of behind-the-scenes images from the movie, courtesy of the director himself.

Released in 1983 and having been distributed under a variety of names (including Return of the Aliens), the movie recently enjoyed a new lease of life when he was interviewed for Stephen Edward Thrower’s exhaustive study of exploitation cinema, Nightmare USA.

Despite failing to attract much attention upon initial release, The Deadly Spawn has since enjoyed success on home video (including a DVD from Synapse Films back in 2004), whilst Michael Perilstein’s soundtrack was unearthed the following year. Fans of the movie may find much to enjoy on the tribute site.

Many thanks to Douglas for permission to use these images…

the deadly spawn is a totally underated experience-its just as good as say,the evil dead which i feel is similar in tone.but its very entertaining and puts a lot of modern movies to shame.if u cant get enough of that main spawn monster then dont panic-its in fred olen rays star slammer too in 5 minute cameo.i dig this low budget gem!!!

May i add,if this movie had gotten a better distribution deal,i truly believe it wouldve have been as big a phenomenon as the Evil Dead, now dont get me wrong-I LOVE THE EVIL DEAD,but what irritates me here is the fact that both movies opened up together in the same theatres on 42nd street,in fact Tim(2001 Maniacs)Sullivan who worked on the Deadly Spawn as a kid, says he remember meeting Sam Raimi,Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell at the screening. Why did the one movie fair better than other? Well,Evil Dead had Irvin Shapiro behind it and thaqt in itself pretty much cemented it in the minds of Americans because he was a great distributor and saw to it that Evil Dead was marketed in just the right way and it worked.Had he handled Deadly Spawn-who knows?Special effectes are brilliantly realised here for a low budget feature and the tension excelently maintained.I love this movie but if you want a fantastic in depth look at the film, may i suggest Stephen Throwers outstanding book-Nightmare USA-it has a whole chapter devoted to The Deadly Spawn. Its great.

  3. Have you read our interview with the director Bazza? You can find it at http://drgoresfunhouse.com/interviews/filmmakers/douglas-mckeown-talks-the-deadly-spawn/

And I agree, Stephen Thrower did a great job with Nightmare USA.
