Having first burst onto the screen with his low budget thriller Shallow Grave in 1994 (which also introduced the world to one Ewan McGregor), Boyle has remained an extremely busy filmmaker, with his work ranging from classic to awful.

So far, his twenty-three-year career has only boasted one true horror movie, 2002’s 28 Days Later, although many of his other projects have touched upon such material as betrayal, murder and suicide. The latest news is that Boyle’s next project is not going to be a feature film but a stage production: a long-cherished adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein.

Way back when, Boyle had worked as a theatre director and it has been almost ten years since he first conceived the notion of developing a play based on the gothic tale. The production is to be developed by playwright Nick Dear (The Art of Success), with art direction from Nicholas Hytner (The History Boys). The play, which is being created for the National Theatre, is set to debut in late 2010 or early the following year.
