NEWS – A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin Finally Comes to UK DVD

Italian filmmaker Lucio Fulci has been given a poor treatment in the UK over the years. As well as three of his titles being banned as ‘video nasties’ during the 1980s, very few of his sleazy and stylish classics have been released on home video. Aside from three of his movies being released on DVD over the last couple of years (The Black Cat, Manhattan Baby and a censored cut of The New York Ripper), British fans have been forced to order their films from the likes of Blue Underground in the States.

Good news, however, is that his 1971 giallo classic Una lucertola con la pelle di donna, more commonly referred to as A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin, is finally making its way to region 2. Released through Studio Canal and Optimum Classics, the movie will hit the shelves on June 7 and will retail around £19.99. The special features are nothing to get excited about (a trailer) but it is about time that more Fulci classics were released in the UK.

For those who wish to see it on the big screen, the surreal thriller will be shown at the Fantastic Films Weekend on June 4 at the National Media Museum in Bradford, Yorkshire. A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin marked Fulci’s move into darker territories after the erotic thriller Una sull’altra/Perversion Story two years earlier and is considered by many to be one of his most underrated movies.

NEWS – Return to Salem’s Lot Finally Comes to DVD

Warner have released a new series of DVDs this week entitled the Archive Collection, which sees hard-to-find cult classics finally coming into the digital age in all their widescreen glory. Amongst these is A Return to Salem’s Lot, Larry Cohen’s 1987 direct-to-video sequel to Tobe Hooper’s critically acclaimed TV adaptation of Stephen King’s novel about a small town filled with vampires. Released almost a decade after the mini series, the movie followed a string of popular titles for Cohen, which included Q: The Winged Serpent, The Stuff and It’s Alive III: Island of the Alive.

A Return to Salem’s Lot saw Anthropologist Joe Weber (Cohen regular Michael Moriarty) and his rebellious son Jeremy (Ricky Addison Reed) arriving in Salem’s Lot, where Joe had grown up and has recently inherited a house from his estranged aunt. But they soon discover that there is something unusual about the residents of the town and, even as Jeremy is seduced by a young girl, Amanda (Tara Reid), Joe is asked by the leader of the community, Judge Axel, to document their history.

Although it was released as a double feature on VHS with the first movie, A Return to Salem’s Lot has yet to make its way onto region 1, although it did appear briefly in Europe. Warner have finally released the film on widescreen as a mail-to-order, although it is only available for customers in the US. No special features have been announced so it is likely to be a vanilla release.

NEWS – Three Dario Argento Classics Released Later This Month

For those who did not catch our news story last week, Arrow Video are planning on unleashing three classic Dario Argento thrillers later this month. Having previously given a decent release for his 2001 giallo Non ho Sonno/Sleepless, they have now turned their attention to other underrated gems from his back catalogue. Whilst the American label Blue Underground have been concentrating on his ’70s output, Arrow have been giving his later offerings special editions.

March 22 will see the simultaneous releases of the following:
- Opera/Terror at the Opera –1987 giallo that saw a understudy (Cristina Marsillach) become the focus of an obsessed fan, repeatedly abducting her and forcing her to watch as he murders her friends.
Special features include an exclusive collector’s booklet, feature presentation (102 minutes), poster, two versions of the movie, Demonia music video and more…
- La sindrome di Stendhal/The Stendhal Syndrome – 1996 thriller in which a beautiful young detective (Asia Argento) with an affliction that causes her to lose consciousness when overwhelmed by art attempts to track down a serial killer.
Special features include exclusive collector’s booklet, Dario Argento trailer gallery and poster…
- Il cartaio/The Card Player – 2004 thriller in about a maniac who kidnaps young woman and forces the police to play card games online, before brutally slaughtering his victims in front of a webcam if they lose. But when the chief’s own daughter is taken, the police must win at any cost.
Special features include The Making of The Card Player featurette, exclusive collector’s booklet, poster and more…

All three releases come with double sided sleeve.

NEWS – Charles Band Reveals Details on Puppet Master Box Set

Cult filmmaker and producer extraordinaire Charles Band has revealed details about various upcoming titles from Full Moon. Having been responsible for a slew of cult classics during the 1980s under his Empire banner (including Ghoulies and Troll), Band has spent the last two decades churning out countless straight-to-video horror and fantasy flicks, regularly keeping his loyal fan base updates with the use of blogs.

He has just released a new Vidcast, loaded with info about his upcoming projects. Puppet Master: Axis of Evil, the tenth entry in the long running franchise that was first started by Band and director David Schmoeller back in 1989, is set for release around the world in mid-July, but a special box set of the series will be available from Full Moon’s website from June 15.

Axis of Evil will also be the company’s first Blu-ray release, which will then be followed over the coming years by Full Moon’s back catalogue also receiving a similar treatment. He has also announced that Schmoeller’s Puppet Master is currently being remastered from the original 35mm negatives and will look amazing. The set will also come with trading cards and stickers for each poster and each set will be numbered (there will be 18,000 in total).

Other releases from Full Moon later in the year will be Killjoy 3, whilst Band is also planning to shoot Gingerdeadman 3: Saturday Night Cleaver as soon as the script has been finalized.

NEWS – Edison’s 1910 Frankenstein to be Remastered for DVD

Forget Robert De Niro, Bela Lugosi and even Boris Karloff… the original Frankenstein was Charles Ogle! 2010 celebrates the centennial anniversary of J. Searle Dawley’s adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic, which was the first ever motion picture to be based on the story.

Shot at Thomas Edison’s New York studio over the course of three days, the twelve-minute film starred silent movie actor Augustus Phillips as Dr. Frankenstein (in his debut role), whilst Ogle (who would also design his own makeup) would portray the Monster.

Author and Frankenstein fanatic Frederick C. Wiebel Jr., who had begun researching a book on the film back in 1990, eventually stumbled upon the last known print and set about having it restored for a DVD release.

In his new book, Edison’s Frankenstein, which was released by BearManor Media last December, Wiebel Jr. charts the making of one of the genre’s first offerings. NEWS – Tremors TV Show Now on DVD

Ron Underwood’s original B-movie classic Tremors was the perfect balance of horror and comedy. A throwback to the cheap flicks of the 1950s, the movie co-starred Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward as handymen in a remote desert town that is suddenly plagued by underground reptiles that hunt through sound. Each sequel got progressively worse, with the fourth installment serving as a prequel.

Universal have given fans a treat this week by releasing the entire series of the small screen spin-off as one box set. Split over three discs and running over nine hours, the show comes in its original full screen ratio with a 2.0. stereo track.

Following on from the events of Tremors 3: Back to Perfection, franchise veteran Burt Gummer (Michael Gross) once again wages war against the vicious graboids with the help of an assortment of outcasts and losers.

The TV show could also feature Marcia Strassman (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids), Lela Lee (Scrubs) and Dean Norris (Starship Troopers).

Whilst there is not much in the way of special features, the whole series for $19.98 on Universal’s site, or $22.99 on Amazon, is a good deal.

NEWS – No Right Turn Region 2 DVD Details

Those that have been eagerly awaiting a region 2 release of David Noel Bourke’s surreal noir drama No Right Turn will be pleased to know that the movie is finally set to surface on April 10, courtesy of Another World Entertainment.

Boasting lush cinematography and dark sexual overtones, the movie has developed something of a cult following over the last couple of years, even before it had even been screened.

Shot in Copenhagen, Denmark and co-starring Sira Stampe (Hideous Kinky), with an appearance from Kim Sønderholm (Craig), the film is a sleazy fantasy through a world of sex, drugs and violence.

The second feature from Bourke (check out an interview with him at our sister site, Hijack Hollywood), No Right Turn is unlike anything else that has been released for some time, calling to mind old school film noir blended with David Lynch’s psychodramas.

The DVD will include an audio commentary, deleted scenes, a making of, a Q&A with Bourk, trailers and more, whilst the movie itself will come in optional 5.1 and with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

The movie, which was shot in English, will be presented in this language, although the artwork will be in Danish.

NEWS – Win Argento’s The Card Player on DVD from Arrow

Fans of Euro horror have been spoilt rotten over the last few years, thanks to long overdue releases from such cult labels as Blue Underground, Shameless and Arrow. The latter have already given us excellent editions of Lamberto Bava’s Macabro/Macabre, Lucio Fulci’s Quella villa accanto al cimitero/The House by the Cemetery and Dario Argento’s Non ho Sonno/Sleepless. Their latest release will see them once again return to modern Argento territory with his 2004 cyber thriller Il cartaio/The Card Player.

Having already been released by Arrow Films and Fremantle Home Entertainment several years ago, the company now plan to give the movie a special makeover to fit in with their current titles. Detective Anna Mari (Stefania Rocca) is determined to track a serial killer who is abducting his victims and then forcing the police to play card games with them over the internet, killing the girls online if they lose.

When a British girl becomes the next victim, Irish inspector John Brennan (Liam Cunningham) is sent over to assist. But when the commissioner’s own daughter, Lucia Marini (Fiore Argento), is kidnapped, Anna has no choice but to seek the help of a professional card player, a cocky young kid called Remo (Silvio Muccino).

The DVD is scheduled for release on the 22nd of this month and will be priced at £15.99 (R.R.P.). The special features will include a double sided sleeve featuring new artwork (as shown on this page) and an exclusive collector’s booklet, as well as the extras that were included in the original release (a making of and The Card Player Promo). NEWS – Hammer’s Beyond the Rave DVD Special Edition Now Available to Order

The MySpace mini series Beyond the Rave may have marked a rather mediocre return to form for the Hammer brand, but fans live in hope that things will soon improve. Those that were entertained by the mini serial will be interesed to hear that the company have started shipping out DVDs today and order now while stocks last.

5,000 copies of the new ‘limited special edition’ DVD have been produced, each individually numbered for those die hard collectors. Special features include:
- Twenty episodes + five bonus scenes
- Deleted scene – “Big Jim’s Last Stand”

NEWS – Blu-ray and DVD Details for Sorority Row

Since the success of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, slasher remakes have become big business in Hollywood. Whether aiming for the teen crowd (When a Stranger Calls, Prom Night) or offering something a little more hardcore (Halloween, Friday the 13th), many have scored well at the box office. One that was hyped by many sites prior to its release but failed to perform as well as expected was Sorority Row, a glossy and sexy update of Mark Rosman’s cult flick The House on Sorority Row.

Penned by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, whose next flick, Piranha 3D, will be upon us later this year, the movie boasted a super-hot cast that included Briana Evigan (Mother’s Day), Margo Harshman (Rise) and Rumer Willis (John McClane’s daughter). Despite having only earnt just shy of $12m (on a budget of $16m), reaction to the film was surprisingly positive, with the movie owing as much of a debt to I Know What You Did Last Summer as Rosman’s classic.

Fangoria have scored details on the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release, which is set to arrive from Summit Entertainment on February 23. The special features are as follows:
