NEWS – Corey Haim Dead at 38

Former ’80s star Corey Haim died earlier today from a suspected drug overdose. The troubled actor, who became a heartthrob after appearing in The Lost Boys back in 1987, had been battling a well-publicised drug addiction for many years. Alongside Corey Feldman, who he would co-star with in License to Drive, Dream a Little Dream and the erotic thriller Blown Away, Haim had attempted to make a comeback with the hit reality show The Two Coreys, which was cancelled in 2008.

Having first come to came alongside Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder in the 1986 drama Lucas, Haim would become a teen icon with roles in Prayer of the Rollerboy and Dream Machine, but the 1990s would see him gradually slip into obscurity. His disappointment at failing to land a lead role in 2008’s Lost Boys: The Tribe was documented on his show, whilst his recovery from bankruptcy also placed a strain on his career.

According to the Washington Post, ‘Haim died at 2:15 a.m. at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank.’ Although no exact details have been released until after an autopsy has been performer, the cause is believed to have been drug-related. Despite a fledging career, Haim had continued to work on a variety of supporting roles, including last year’s Crank: High Voltage. IMDb currently lists several projects as being in ‘post production.’

Haim had turned thirty-eight in December.

NEWS – Alarm Calls Police to Wes Craven’s Home

Wes Craven faced a life-or-death situation whilst residing at his home in the Hollywood Hills. Well, that is a slight exaggeration but it’s far more interesting than the truth. TMZ have reported that police were called to the home on Thursday when alarm had gone off at the cult director’s house.

The home being invaded by a deadly force has been a focal point of Craven’s career: from his directorial debut The Last House on the Left back in 1972, through such ‘80s efforts as A Nightmare on Elm Street and Shocker, to the hugely successful Scream franchise and Red Eye.

But whilst in Craven’s world of make believe the police may have found Robert Englund, Mitch Pileggi or – Heaven forbid – Matthew Lillard, the climax to the truth was far less sensational. Nothing happened! The police arrived to find out that it was a false alarm and that the director was not even aware that it had been triggered.

Thankfully, Craven’s movies are a little more exciting that this. Perhaps if the police had planned ahead they could have arrived at his home wearing fedoras or ghost masks.

Think yourself lucky, Mr. Craven, it could have been Rip Torn!

NEWS – Dennis Hopper Losing His Battle with Cancer

With the last few months having seen the likes of Dan O’Bannon pass away, movie fans will be sad to hear that screen legend Dennis Hopper is losing his battle against prostate cancer. Having first been revealed to the press by his manager, Sam Maydew, back in late October, Hopper’s condition has severely declined recently and is said to have very little time left. Last Thursday, the seventy-three year old actor filed for divorce against his fifth wife, actress Victoria Duffy, whom he had first worked with on Chasers and Witch Hunt back in 1994. But, after almost fourteen years together, Duffy was reportedly furious at Hopper’s decision to reduce her share of his will and has also requested her to leave their California home.

Hopper’s life and career have been rife with controversy, with his high profile drug habit during the 1970s becoming something of a Hollywood legend. Having first found acclaim for supporting roles in such classics as Rebel Without a Cause and , Hopper become the voice of a disillusioned generation with his low budget classics Easy Rider. Despite almost ruining his career, Hopper eventually made a comeback in the mid-1980s with David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, as well as the cult horror sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Since then, he has enjoyed success with the likes of True Romance, Speed, 24 and Land of the Dead. Despite this, arguably his most famous role was as a crazed Vietnam photographer in Francis Ford Coppola’s epic war movie Apocalypse Now.

NEWS – Kiefer Sutherland Appears on Letterman in Drag

Giving the most memorable David Letterman appearance since Crispin Glover back in 1987, former Brat-packer Kiefer Sutherland arrived for his interview in a dress, much to the surprise of his host. Promoting the premier of the eighth season of the always excellent TV thriller 24 (which starts in the US this Sunday), Sutherland was far-removed from his intense on-screen persona by showing his more playful side.

The hard-living drinking escapades of the forty-three year old star have been well documented over recent years, with the filming of season 7 delayed in part due to him spending time in jail after being arrested for a DUI.
